I paid him a $500 retainer for a cut and dry divorce. IT took him MONTHS to write up papers. By then, my husband and I were at odds and he refused to sign. Then. Mr Scherer fell off the face of the Earth. He was never in his office, did not answer office calls nor cell phone calls. His voicemail box was full so I couldn't leave messages. About 6 months after hiring him, I ran into him at Hastings and expressed my dismay. He took my number (acting like he never had it) and called me the next Monday saying he had had some health issues to explain his lack of presence. He got a hearing set for temporary custody in August of 2013. NEARLY A YEAR AFTER BEING HIRED. He could not meet me before the hearing. During the hearing my husband tried to throw out allegations that my attorney knew nothing about BECAUSE HE NEGLECTED CONTACT WITH ME. The judge ordered temporary custody in my favor, however grudgingly due to the unfounded accusations that he did not defend me against. All Mr. Scherer could say was "I have no knowledge of this." The judge further ordered Mr. Scherer to mediate a session with my husband so that we could come to terms. (I had a protective order against him so it was illegal for us to meet personally.) After this hearing, Mr. Scherer once again disappeared. I set up my own meeting with my husband and we came to agreeable terms. I hand delivered the terms to Mr. Scherer's mailbox. I have not heard from him since. In September of 2014, I sent a notarized letter via certified mail removing him from my case and demanding return of my retainer. It has been 9 months and I have not received a phone call, letter, email or divorce.
